Pausing of Greenway welcome

A decision by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohue to pause the Galway section of the Dublin to Galway Greenway has been welcomed by Paul Connaughton TD.

‘Minister Donoghue recently announced that the Galway section of the Dublin to Galway Greenway is to be paused and progress is to continue on the Kildare and Meath sections of the Greenway. Minister Donohue also stated that he remains committed to completing the entire Greenway in the longer term and will work with local communities and landowners to make it a reality.

‘I very much welcome the announcement. The development of the Greenway was a huge concern for landowners in county Galway and this announcement will allow breathing space for this to be looked at again.

‘In recent months I have met with many landowners who were very concerned about the proposed Greenway route, about the lack of consultation and the impact it would have on their daily lives. I am glad that their concerns are being properly considered. For a Greenway to work properly, it is imperative that time is taken to reach agreement with landholders along the route.

‘I have also had discussions with cycling groups in the county who were also dissatisfied with the lack of consultation and who wanted a more inclusive consultation process. Pausing this section of the Greenway is the correct decision, it will give time to ensure that the eventual Greenway is created in co-operation with landowners, which will greatly benefit the eventual operation of the route.

‘I will continue to work with Minister Donohue in coming months on this issue and look forward to a sensible resolution of this issue.’
