Refurbishment of Ballinasloe Garda Station

Galway East TD Paul Connaughton has welcomed news that Ballinasloe Garda Station is to be refurbished and stated that this, along with recent announcements of investment in new Garda vehicles and recruitment of additional Gardaí, is a necessary and welcome boost to the force and has pledged continued Government support for the fight against crime.

‘I visited Ballinasloe Garda Station a few months ago and saw first-hand the need for immediate improvement in facilities at the station. I am glad that this work is now going to be carried out and hope that the work in Ballinasloe will be carried out as soon as possible and will be urging Minister Fitzgerald to ensure that Ballinasloe is top of the list when it comes to station refurbishment. This work will be carried out by the Office of Public Works and I anticipate that in the region of €500,000 will be spent on upgrading the station in Ballinasloe. The refurbishment programme nationally will cost €60, which will include the building of new stations.

‘Yesterday €5.3 million was announced for 260 new Garda vehicles, which will boost the force’s capabilities throughout the region. This, along with last week’s announcement in the Budget of the recruitment of 600 new Gardaí in 2016 will significantly boost Garda resources.

‘Minister Fitzgerald is committed to the fight against crime, both rural and urban, and I note that last week’s budget also included increased funding for Garda surveillance of criminal activity and special operations and the doubling of the budget for Community Alert and Crimestoppers. A modern and effective Garda force is crucial in the fight against crime and the announcements of the last week help provide Gardaí with the necessary resources to protect citizens and prevent crime in the Galway region.’
