Hopeful of resolution on CE scheme issue

Galway East TD Paul Connaughton is hopeful that a resolution can be found for CE scheme workers over 60 who wish to stay on the scheme to retirement.

‘I have met Minister Kevin Humphreys TD about this on a number of occasions, the most recent of which was last week. I am not anticipating that any announcement will be made as part of the forthcoming budget, but am hopeful that there will be movement on this issue in coming weeks.

‘A change to the present conditions of the scheme would mean so much to CE scheme workers throughout the country. At the moment, many CE scheme workers who are due to finish on their scheme and who are over 60, will be forced to apply for Jobseeker’s when they would prefer to continue on Community Employment doing valuable work for their local community until retirement. Forcing these people on to Jobseeker’s Allowance makes no sense. I have been contacted by CE scheme workers from all across the country who are hopeful that this change will be made in coming weeks which will mean that they can spend the time that remains until retirement working for their local scheme and I believe that this is a much better way of spending scarce government resources.’

‘I will continue to press for this change to be made as quickly as possible and know that Minister Kevin Humphreys can see the benefits of the suggestion, both to the scheme participants and the exchequer.’
