Village and Town Renewal Scheme welcome

A new six-year village and town renewal scheme with a fund of €30 million was welcomed this morning by Galway East TD Paul Connaughton.

‘The new scheme was announced this morning by An Taoiseach and it will run for six years from 2016. I believe it will result in village enhancement projects across East Galway and will be operated by Galway County Council in our region. Eligible projects include enhancement of villages, small towns and surrounding countryside. The creation of greenways, cycleways, and upgrading of parks and civic areas, as well as the renovation of derelict buildings are also envisaged under the new scheme.

‘The recent CEDRA report showed that small towns and villages have been severely affected by the economic downtown and this Government is committed to addressing the recommendations of the CEDRA report and ensuring that the recovery spreads to all parts of the country.

‘Local community groups across the county will now have to decide what projects they should seek funding for. This funding of €30 million nationally is significant and will make a huge difference to towns and villages across county Galway.’
