Funding of Fampyra welcome

Galway East TD Paul Connaughton has welcomed a decision by the HSE to reimburse patients who have responded positively to the Fampyra drug for patients with multiple sclerosis.

‘In recent months I have met a number of constituents whose MS symptoms had become significantly worse after their inclusion on a clinical trial of Fampyra ended and the drug was not funded under the medical card scheme by the HSE.

‘MS patients spoke to me of decreased mobility and an inability to carry out everyday functions because of hand and leg tremors. The cost of continuing on the drug was beyond their reach and I am delighted that the HSE and the drug manufacturer Biogen have now reached an agreement.

‘I will now be pressing to ensure that patients who responded positively to the drug receive their reimbursements as quickly as possible. I understand that those reimbursements could start as early as next month.

‘I look forward to MS patients around the country now being able to access this drug, which can, in some cases, make an enormous difference to the quality of life of MS patients.’
