An allocation of over 64,000 euro for flood mitigation works in the Portumna area was welcomed today by Galway East TD Paul Connaughton.

‘Over 64,000 euro is to be made available from the Office of Public Works to Galway County Council to carry out work in coming months at Maghanearla, Cappakeela, Tynagh Road and Thornfield.

‘The largest project is located at Tynagh Road (Gillane’s), where over 31,600 euro will be spent channelling water run-off from agricultural land in open channels and pipes through adjacent road margins and agricultural lands.

‘Over 17,300 will be spent at Thornfield enlarging culverts on access points to agricultural land and associated works. The project at Maghanearla will cost over 5,600 euro and will consist of laying pipes in the road margin and connections to existing culverts. Almost 10,000 euro will be spent at Cappakeela expanding the existing culverts and cleaning the channel where necessary.

‘Flood mitigation is a major priority in south Galway and continued investment is needed to target problem areas. I welcome these four projects in the Portumna area, it underlines this Government’s commitment to addressing flooding problems in the south of the county and I would like to thank Minister Simon Harris for his prioritisation of this issue. He has visited this area of south Galway on a number of occasions and is due to return in coming weeks at my invitation. During that visit I will be highlighting to him the need for continued investment in relation to flood works in this region.’
