Bobby Kerr, Independent Chair of the Post Office Network Business Development Group was in Tuam on Friday last at the request of East Galway TD Paul Connaughton, who impressed upon him the importance of the post office network in rural Ireland and arranged a meeting with representatives of Tuam Credit Union to discuss possible synergies between Credit Unions and Post Offices.
‘I invited Bobby Kerr to East Galway and he took up the invitation on Friday afternoon last, when he visited Tuam. The visit was important in that it took place in advance of the publication of the Business Development Group’s report next week of a report on the future of post offices. Following this report, there will be a month long window for interested parties to respond.
‘I wanted to impress upon Mr. Kerr what post offices mean in rural Ireland and also organised a meeting between him and Mick Mulkeen of Tuam Credit Union where possible synergies between post offices and credit unions were discussed.
‘The visit was a timely one and a productive one and I am delighted that Mr. Kerr accepted my invitation to come to east Galway and discuss the future of post offices. I await the publication of the Business Development Group’s report at the end of next week and would urge all interested parties to have their say in the month long consultation process which will follow.
