Further clarification needed on beef data and genomic scheme

East Galway TD Paul Connaughton has welcomed clarification provided by Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney TD in relation to the Beef Data and Genomic Scheme but said that further clarification is needed to allay farmers’ concerns.
‘I very much welcome any investment in the suckler herd and welcome the Minister’s clarification earlier today in relation to certain aspects of the Beef Data and Genomic Scheme. However, I have been contacted by a number of farmers in recent days who have concerns over various elements of the scheme, for example the six-year duration and the fact that farmers may face retrospective penalties and could be liable to pay back all monies received through the scheme.
‘Earlier today the Minister issued a statement pointing out that force majeure considerations in the scheme will deal with cases involving illness, injury and death of scheme participants and this is welcome, but I have also received many queries over four and five star bulls and believe that if the Minister did engage in further consultation with farmers and farm groups, he would understand that while the scheme is very welcome, there are certain conditions that need to be relaxed or changed.
‘I am hoping to meet the Minister on this issue in the coming week.’
