New organic scheme welcome

News that a new organic farming scheme is to open for applications shortly has been welcomed by East Galway TD Paul Connaughton.
‘Applications for the new scheme will have to be made online but there will be no requirement for farmers to use an agricultural advisor to make the application. The process will be simple and farmers should have no difficulty in submitting their application. However, farmers who prefer to have an advisor make the application on their behalf will be able to do so.
‘The new scheme will offer significantly increased rates of aid to organic farmers, both those currently converting to organic farming and previously established organic farmers. I expect that the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr. Tom Hayes TD, will announce the opening of the new organic farming scheme shortly.
‘The Department will be writing to all existing organic farm scheme participants in coming weeks to update them on this development and provide advice on the options available to them.
‘The increased rates which will be available in this scheme will prove a timely boost to the organic farming sector and I would advise all organic farmers in East Galway to apply for this scheme as soon as it becomes available.’
