Deal for ‘old young farmers’ welcome

The decision to allow ‘old young farmers’ access to the National Reserve was welcomed this week by East Galway TD Paul Connaughton who said allowing farmers who established holdings between 2008 and 2010 access to entitlements is a just recognition of the work and investment that these trained farmers put in to establishing their farm holdings.
‘I welcome Minister Coveney’s decision to extend the period from 2010 back to 2008 as this will now facilitate those farmers who did not benefit from Installation Aid after it was discontinued.
‘On February 6th, I attended a meeting in the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone and heard the concerns of young farmers who want access to additional entitlements, but because their holdings were established after 2008 and before the reference period of 2010, they would lose out on accessing entitlements.
‘The decision to facilitate this cohort of farmers is a common sense measure and I hope many young farmers can be facilitated when they submit applications to the National Reserve for additional entitlements.’
