News that the Finance Bill will see users of group water schemes included in tax reliefs for water charges was warmly welcomed this week by Deputy Paul Connaughton.
The East Galway TD said that following the announcement of Budget 2015, he was contacted by many constituents in East Galway and organisers of local group water schemes who asked if the tax relief would extend to customers of group water schemes.
‘I immediately contacted Finance Minister Michael Noonan about this issue and have since received confirmation from him that this anomaly will be rectified and the Finance Bill will include a provision whereby users of group water schemes can claim 20 percent tax relief on their water charges, up to a maximum of €100 in tax relief.
‘Many householders in county Galway have been paying water charges for years to their local group water scheme and this news that they can now avail of up to €100 in tax relief will be very welcome. This news will also be welcomed by organisers of group water schemes as it will reduce the burden on their members.
‘Minister Michael Noonan has once again proved to be a most approachable Minister who is willing to listen to proposals and who will, if he decides that there is merit in a proposal, act swiftly to institute change. This change will put more money in the pockets of hundreds of householders across county Galway and level the playing field in terms of water users.
‘Finally, I would like to thank the many constituents and water scheme organisers who contacted me about this matter on Tuesday night and Wednesday as it was their quick thinking and willingness to contact their local representative that brought about this important change.’
