Rates exemption for sports facilities welcome

News that the rates burden on sports clubs is to be eased was welcomed today by East Galway TD Paul Connaughton.
‘An amendment to the Valuation Bill 2012 will mean that sports clubs that previously paid rates on bar and sports buildings will now only pay rates on the part of the building that generates income, usually the bar. This will result in a significant reduction in rates for most clubs.
‘Local sports clubs are at the heart of communities across East Galway and their existence is only made possible because local volunteers are willing to give of their time for the benefit of the local community. This change is a very welcome and is a common sense approach to the provision of much-needed sporting facilities in communities all across the country. The amendment will help managers of sports facilities at community level and in turn will make sport more accessible for children and adults of all ages.’
