Town centre post office must be retained in Athenry

The need to retain jobs and a vibrant post office in the town centre of Athenry was highlighted this week by East Galway T.D. Paul Connaughton who said that the transfer of eleven sorting staff from Athenry to Loughrea was significant and should not be replicated in other regional towns.
Deputy Connaughton said the staff transfer had prompted local families and business interests to contact him with a view to ensuring that jobs and postal services are retained in the town centre in Athenry.
‘People in the community have contacted me in recent days about the transfer of eleven staff from Athenry to Loughrea. I think that An Post should spell out their future vision for postal services in Athenry to ease local fears about the service. The movement of eleven staff is significant in terms of jobs in the town centre in Athenry and the knock-on effect this has for local businesses and restaurants. An Post must not contribute to the withdrawal of resources from regional towns.
‘I am working with local councillor Peter Feeney on this issue and intend to get answers from An Post in terms of their future plans for the town centre post office in Athenry.’
