Connaughton seeks full time CIS for local roads

The need for funding to be made available for Community Involvement Schemes for local roads was stressed this week by East Galway T.D. Paul Connaughton.

‘This year funding of €10.6 million was provided by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport for a pilot Community Involvement Scheme. The money was used to improve 240 kms of local roads in 377 locations. I believe that it is imperative that this be extended to 2014 and beyond as there are many local roads in East Galway that are badly in need of repair through such a community-led scheme.

‘The Minister, in a Dáil reply to me this week, stated that he has not yet decided whether to initiate a new round of Community Involvement Schemes in 2014 and I will be pressing him in coming days and weeks to make sure that the new scheme is continued into 2014 and beyond as it is the only mechanism available for the improvement of many local roads which are a vital part of the road network in rural Ireland.’
