Connaughton seeks speedy resolution to motorway issue

The NRA is currently in discussion with the preferred bidder for the M17/18 motorway, but pressure must be maintained to ensure that this project is brought to fruition as quickly as possible, according to Deputy Paul Connaughton.

The East Galway T.D. raised the issue with Transport Minister Leo Varadkar in the Dáil on Wednesday morning.  ‘The Government’s stimulus package announced last July details private investment of €1.4 billion in infrastructure projects in an effort to stimulate economic growth and create employment.

‘The M17/18 has been identified as a priority scheme as part of that initiative and is to be included in the first phase of the programme.  Now that the Newlands Cross PPP has been signed, the next priority must be to get contracts signed in relation to the M17/18 and get work started as soon as possible.

‘This is a hugely important project for mid and south Galway and the employment created by the project will be much sought after. It is imperative that every effort is made to get this project across the line as soon as possible and get work started on the ground. I will continue to raise this issue with Ministers Varadkar and Howlin at every opportunity and ensure that the priority status given to this project results in real progress.’
