A commitment that legal agreements will issue in coming weeks to householders forced to relocate following the flooding of November 2009 was given a cautious welcome this week by Deputy Paul Connaughton.
‘I raised this issue in the Dáil under Topical Issues on Thursday afternoon. I have raised it time and time again with the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton T.D., but raised the issue on Thursday as this week marked the third anniversary of the flooding.
‘The reply received from the Minister stated that the legal agreements are to issue to the householders in question within the next week or so and adds that there will be no delay in issuing payment once the terms of the legal agreement have been met.
‘I am heartened by the response but will continue to highlight this issue and bring pressure to bear on the Minister to ensure that the commitment is followed through on.
‘The past three years have taken a huge toll on the householders forced to abandon their homes following the flooding of November 2009. They have been without a home since, many have been living in rented accommodation and there was a huge lack of transparency in relation to the process, which added to the fears and stress for all involved.’
