Connaughton welcomes retention of Ballinlough teaching post

A decision by the Minister for Education to retain an EAL support teacher at Carrick NS, Ballinlough, until the end of the school year, was warmly welcomed this week by Paul Connaughton T.D.

School authorities were notified of the decision on Friday afternoon. The EAL support teacher’s contract at the school had been due to expire later that day, but the post is now being retained until next June, due to increased pupil numbers.

‘I made a number of representations to the Minister for Education in relation to this matter in recent days, as there was huge concern in the Ballinlough area that this teaching post would be lost. The school didn’t have the required number of pupils in September to retain the post, but now has the required complement, so it would have been nonsensical if the post was not retained,’ said the Fine Gael T.D.

‘I’m glad that common sense has prevailed in this matter and that pupils in the Ballinlough school will continue to have top quality learning support available to them throughout the year. I would also like to congratulate School Principal Peggy Cheevers and her staff for their dedication to the pupils of Carrick NS and their determination to ensure that this crucial teaching post was retained.’
