Review of changes to Disability Allowance welcome

Deputy Paul Connaughton has welcomed the Taoiseach’s decision to put proposed changes to Disability Allowance for young people on hold pending a review.

“The decision to put this change on hold pending a review is very welcome.  I felt that this was a very retrograde stop and made my views known as strongly as possible on the matter immediately after the announcement. I now look forward to putting my views across to the review that is being conducted by Ms. Ita Mangan, Chairperson of the Tax and Social Welfare Commission.

“I am well aware that this cut greatly dismayed many people in East Galway and beyond. Disabled young people are among the most vulnerable people in our society and I have always put the protection of vulnerable people at the top of my political priorities and will continue to do so into the future.

“With the volume of cuts and tax increases that had to be made as part of this Budget, in order to tackle our current yearly overspend of €18 billion, decisions would have to be taken that would affect every single family in this country, but even with that being the case, I believe that the decision to cut the money available to disabled young people needed further examination and I welcome this decision to conduct a review.”
